Small Scale Cedar Raised Gardens In Houston Texas

Rooted Garden Client Adds Raised Gardens

The Rooted Garden team was thrilled when Memorial area client, Nesi, wanted to incorporate edibles into her existing landscape space.

She didn’t have to compromise any play space that her three children used and was able to add 40 square feet of edible growing space inside her lovely boxwood hedges.

Even in this small scale space, these new kitchen garden raised beds meant about 100 carefully planned out organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Planting In a Small Scale Raised Garden

Using the Rooted Garden planting style, we make the most of small scale gardens by planting vining plants in the center and adding loads of herbs and greens along the outside of each raised garden bed.

This enables us to get the most out of a small space which is critical for gardening inside the city of Houston.

Raised beds allow you to make the most of a small scale space because you plant your gardens more intensively and make the most of each and every square foot.

Organic Vegetables

Rooted Garden never purchases vegetables grown with synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, and we do not purchase plants from suppliers who do either.

This tomato is using one of our signature, metal trellises as a growing support. Once the fruit has formed, it will begin to ripen and be ready to harvest. Did you know tomatoes can ripen even after they’re harvested? For clients challenged by wildlife getting to their vegetables before they do, we recommend harvesting early and ripening in a window sill.

Raised Cedar Garden

One of the Rooted Garden design principles is raised gardens. Raised gardens allow for ease of tending and a bed full of rich, organic soil for healthy vegetables and herbs.

This garden was built by local carpenters using untreated cedar. The length, width and height were all custom designed to work within the clients’ space.

Kitchen Garden Tending

Tending in the kitchen garden is important for optimal growth and production, especially because of our intensive planting method.

During each of the four growing seasons in Houston the second month is for tending.

Tending duties includes trellising vining vegetables, pruning leaves to direct energy to flowering and fertilizing with an appropriate organic fertilizer to ensure a rich harvest during the third month, or the harvesting month.

We have taken the guess work out of gardening with our own monthly video series called, The Houston Non-Stop Kitchen Garden.

Inside the Club, you’ll learn through video lessons what to plant, tend and harvest during each month in Houston.

Garden Placement

The first step in creating your very own kitchen garden is to schedule an in-person consultation with our garden consultant. During this time we accomplish many things, but one of the most important decisions is deciding together the very best location for your garden will be.

We take into consideration factors such as the amount of sunlight the space receives, the garden size and the amount of time you have to tend it, as well as your budget.

Our goal is to create a beautiful kitchen garden, but for it to feel as it has always belonged.

Houston is the Non-Stop Kitchen Garden

Houston is one of the few places where the kitchen garden can be growing ALL year long.

How lucky is that to have the opportunity for four seasons of fresh, organic food?

This photograph was taken during the first warm season where the fruit of this tomato is soaking up each warm and sunny day as it ripens up to become a delicious garnish, snack or salad topping.

Stone Pathways and Walkways

Stone pathways and borders are an essential design feature taken into account with each garden installation we do.

We want our clients to have adequate space to comfortably move around the garden, but the gravel also plays an important part in providing a clean aesthetic.

The team coordinates the gravel color selection with existing hardscape features, or other décor elements. The gravel is delivered and installed as soon as the space is cleared and the steel edging is installed.
