Native Plants and Pollinator Friendly Flowers in the Houston Garden
Kitchen gardening and pollinator gardens are the perfect way to compliment one another and can easily be incorporated together into a landscape space.
Pollinator gardens provide what beneficial insects such as lady bugs, butterflies and bees need to nest, grow. and thrive. These insects find refuge, protection, food and water amongst these blooming flowers which benefits the kitchen garden too.
The Rooted Garden team had already completed a four garden classic kitchen garden for Piney Point client Marnie a year previously. We were thrilled when she called us to recreate a grassy space beside her pool into a pollinator garden!
Designing a Native Plant and Pollinator Friendly Garden in Houston
Each pollinator garden we create incorporates various plant heights, textures and blooming seasons for a beautiful space throughout the year. More importantly, these elements ensure pollinators have food and shelter whenever they need it as the seasons change.
We love to utilize native plants in our pollinator friendly gardens.
Native plants require less maintenance and are adapted to the unique climate and weather in Houston, requiring less water and care.
Using Trellises in a Native Plant and Pollinator Friendly Houston Garden
Trellises are a signature design feature within our kitchen garden designs for their beauty, interest and function within kitchen gardens.
But, we also love to use trellises within native plant and pollinator spaces too.
Obelisk, arch and panel trellises bring height and interest to native plant gardens, give a formal feel to a space that may otherwise feel ‘too wild’ and also create consistency in the look of a native plant garden when plants may rise and fall throughout the different growing seasons.
And of course, trellises provide functionality in the native plant garden as they allow plants and vines to grow upwards while also providing resting spaces for flying pollinators and birds as well as shaded areas below for nesting.
Pathways are a Key Aspect of Native Plant and Pollinator Friendly Gardens in Houston
Pathways inside the pollinator garden allow for easy movement and enjoyment of the wonders being created here.
The Rooted Garden team created this gravel path that provides a clean aesthetic and helps to move water away from the space. The pollinator space is separated by steel edging and the pathway becomes complete with railroad inspired steps.
Fountains and Unique Features
To complete the space the team transformed this non-working fountain into a planter for succulents. we love to utilize fountains when possible to allow for a refuge for pollinators.
