Stone Raised Beds Designed by Rooted Garden in Houston

Tour a Custom Stone Raised Bed Kitchen Garden

Created in 2016, this stone kitchen garden was a first for Rooted Garden.

This space was the only one available for a kitchen garden and was previously lawn and a space for the family’s trampoline. While the area does receive shade because of the surrounding trees, we’ve been able to grow loads of greens, herbs, and even lots of fruit in this beautiful stone raised bed.

Take a tour of this beautiful kitchen garden with us.

Plant a Fruit Tree in Your Houston Kitchen Garden

Citrus fruit such as lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit are excellent choices for fruit trees in Houston and can complete the kitchen garden space. There are many varieties, including dwarf, to accommodate any size space.

One tip is to purchase your fruit trees from a local, reputable nursery, to ensure the tree was grated on local root stock. This means it will be able to adapt to the clay soil so common to the Houston area.

Lastly, a fruit tree should not produce fruit for 2-3 years, rather spending this time to grow strong roots.

Stone Raised Gardens Will Last a Lifetime (and Then Some)

The longevity of stone gardens surpasses any other type of material, but is truly an investment in your home.

We added three black, powder coated, metal, obelisk trellises in each garden. They are often found growing with beans, one of the clients favorite vegetables.

Grow an Endless Supply of Herbs and Flowers

Packing your kitchen garden full of freshly grown herbs is possible with any size garden, even the smallest one.

Due to Houston’s unique climate the woody type herbs part of the Mint family can be grown throughout the year. These include, rosemary, oregano, thyme, sage, lavender and chives. Herbs such as cilantro, dill and basil are weather dependent and reply on certain temperature to thrive in the kitchen garden.

Wondering what to do with all the herb harvest? There are so many options that include drying them and saving for future cooking, sachets, gifting to friends and family, making soap, infused oils and even tea.

A Kitchen Garden with A View

We love working with our clients to create spaces that coordinate with their existing landscape, home and finishes.

We like to think of the kitchen garden as a place to get away as much as one to grow fresh vegetables and herbs. Our goal is to reflect that in our designs.

Wouldn’t you agree this is a peaceful, tranquil spot to relax in? We would love to help you set up a similar space in your home.
