See a Houston Kitchen Garden Created in the Memorial Villages

In this Four Garden Classic design the Rooted Garden team transformed an empty back yard to a thriving and beautiful kitchen garden with almost 100 square feet of garden space.

Memorial area client Tamara had a vision for her kitchen garden. At the initial garden consultation, key details were discussed about the sunlight in the space, the client’s home and décor style, and the project budget.

Thankfully, Tamara was open to utilizing much of her space across from the pool as a kitchen garden oasis. As a result, a beautiful and modern aesthetic was essential. The team designed four custom powder coated planters that measure 8’ long x 3’ wide x 2’ tall to fit perfectly within the space.

The Removal and Site Preparation

The team prepares the space where the gardens will be placed, beginning with staking out the total garden space. The garden space, in addition to the pathways, are accounted for and staked accordingly. Next, the hard and laborious work of removing the grass begins. A total space of 25’ x 15’ of grass was removed and then hauled away and disposed of. Steel edging is installed and finally gravel that coordinates with existing gravel and hardscape around Tamara’s home is placed.

Good Quality Soil is a Key Component to a Rooted Garden Installation

The Rooted Garden signature blend soil is brought in to fill the entire 2’ of each garden. This Rooted Garden exclusive soil is a combination of a sandy loam mixture and an organic compost, the perfect composition for growing healthy, organic vegetables and herbs.

Organic and Natural Plants

Each client selects their garden favorites prior to the installation and based on the current planting season. Rooted Garden plants are grown by local, small growers who use only the highest quality, natural materials without added fertilizers or herbicides.

Metal Trellises

Each Rooted Garden installation isn’t complete without a steel trellis. Trellises vary in design, but fall under the category of arch, panel or obelisk and are dependent on the client preference and the garden design.

Trellises provide a place for vining vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and peas to grow up, again maximizing garden space, and also providing a beautiful aesthetic in the garden.

Intensive Planting

The Rooted Garden intensive planting method allows for each vegetable, herb and flower to have just enough space and nothing more. This protects the soil, maximizes the garden space and provides a beautiful aesthetic as the garden grows.
