A Rooted Garden Trio Installation in Houston, Texas

The Rooted Garden team designed and brought to life a unique garden trio garden design for Houston area homeowner April and her husband.

The kitchen garden design completed the homeowners vision for an outdoor space that includes a pool, an outdoor living space, an outdoor kitchen and now a kitchen garden too.

During the initial meeting we met with the homeowners and discussed the garden location and the unique needs necessary for growing herbs and vegetables. They wanted a space that was visible and accessible to the other outdoor living areas. They also wanted the space to be beautiful, productive and to tie in with their homes architectural details.

Before the transformation the client had an open grassy area just waiting for a kitchen garden in the space!

On installation day the gardens were delivered by trailers and carried by a strong team to the newly installed gravel space.

These steel garden beds were custom made to fit the clients unique space by a local steel artist. They will last many, many years and we hope they stay filled for that long with seasonal vegetables and herbs!

The team works together to move the gardens into place. Prior to the garden delivery the team removed over 100 square feet of sod. They installed the stone border with existing stone the client had left over from another project. The stone border ensures that the gravel and grass are separate and provides a clean aesthetic. Once the stone border was created, 5.5 yards of gravel was delivered by dump truck and installed into the space.

The Rooted Garden team spends ample time carefully measuring the pathways in order to create the design the client and Jill envisioned, and to ensure the arch trellises will fit into the space.

Once the gardens are placed the team fills each garden up with a special Rooted Garden blend of a sandy loam organic soil. The soil ensures that the vegetables have the optimal environment for growing. Each season we add additional compost to provide vitamins and nutrients prior to the next growing season and to replenish what was used in the prior season.

Drip irrigation is added to the beds allowing the gardens to run on their own special zone. Vegetables and herbs have unique watering needs different from grass and typical ornamental shrubs. As the temperatures warm up the watering needs can be increased and then decreased during periods of cooler temperatures and rain.

The intensive planting philosophy of giving each plant and seed exactly the amount of space and nothing extra is utilized in each Rooted Garden installation.

After about 6 weeks the garden is even more beautiful then on installation day. Herbs are ready to start harvesting small amounts immediately, which encourages growth, while fruiting vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes and beans take around 75 days. After the end of the season it is time to remove the plant and prepare for the following season. In Houston, we are lucky to have the ability to garden and grow all year long!

The arch trellises sourced by the client are the finishing touches on this personalized space. The trellises support growing vegetables such as tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and peas during certain times of the growing season. During the other times they provide a beautiful piece of art in the garden.
