Tour a Keyhole Kitchen Garden Installation in Houston, Texas

Rooted Garden’s primary goal is to transform spaces into productive and beautiful extensions of our clients homes. The Rooted Garden team accomplished this and more for Museum District client Mark.

This unique, keyhole Corten metal garden was custom designed and created to fit the space.

Grass Removal

The team begins the installation with the laborious work of removing the existing sod and leveling the space.

Gravel

Once the grass is cleared weed barrier cloth is placed to prevent the re-growth of grass in the area and then followed by the addition of gravel.

During the garden consultation the team discussed the gravel color with Mark to ensure that the kitchen garden space coordinates with all the existing features of the home.

Gravel is installed to provide a clean aesthetic and to help water drain away from the area. By keeping the area clear of moisture and water this naturally helps repel pests too.

Garden Placement

The Rooted Garden team carefully unloads and places the very heavy steel gardens. Once they are in place measurements are confirmed and placement adjusted to ensure the walkways are adequate and spacing is even.

Organic Soil

High quality soil is a key component of every Rooted Garden installation. Quality soil ensures healthy plants, adequate growth and nutrition and seed sprouting.

A sandy loam soil blend is ideal for vegetables and herbs and consists of a blend of top soil, clay, sand and compost. The dark color confirms the richness of nutrients we want for strong and healthy plants.

Time to Plant

Now for the total transformation by planting seasonal vegetables, herbs and flowers based on Mark’s preferences. Currently, Houston is planting for hot season which includes plants adapted to temperatures in the 90’s.

These include okra, eggplant, basil, yard long beans, sweet potatoes and tomatillos. These plants and flowers will stay in the garden for the next three months and then be ready to transition to the next season, which is Warm Season II.
