Kitchen Garden Revival is Full of Inspiring Houston Kitchen Gardens Designed by RG

We’re less than one week away from the release of my new book, Kitchen Garden Revival.

This book would not be possible without the help of the amazing photographer, Eric Kelley and without my amazing team at Rooted Garden and our great clients who allowed us to come into their kitchen gardens and photograph for the book.

Eric traveled to Houston twice to take photographs for the book. He first went in January of 2019 and toured through nearly 15 of our Rooted Garden kitchen gardens.

And then he and I met there in May of 2019 and in three days, we ventured into 19 Rooted Garden kitchen gardens from Piney Point Village to West University to River Oaks to Tanglewood.

We traveled the city and got to capture so many of the beautiful Rooted Garden kitchen gardens in their prime.

Scroll through here to see some of the great gardens you’ll see inside Kitchen Garden Revival.

I’m so excited for this book to hit mailboxes soon to not only convince the world to start their own kitchen garden but also to show off what’s possible in the incredible city of Houston.

Piney Point Village Formal Potager featured in Kitchen Garden Revival

Formal Potager in Piney Point Village, Houston

This kitchen garden was one of Rooted Garden’s earliest projects, and we can’t thank client Resa enough for trusting us with her garden design and installation.

Every aspect of this design is custom, and specially coordinated to the Spanish Colonial design of the home. Four Formal Potager Gardens, with over 100 square feet of growing space, were designed with stucco and wood details.

The black, powder coated trellises were also designed to mimic the details of the clients window arches. The trellises serve as growing supports for cucumbers, tomatoes, beans and peas, during the various growing seasons in Houston.

Four Garden Classic designed by Rooted Garden featured in Kitchen Garden Revival

Four Garden Classic in Piney Point Village, Houston, Texas

This Four Garden Classic design was a special gift from a husband, to his wife Marnie, and consists of four 4’ x 8’ cedar gardens, with stepping stones for comfort within the garden.

When our team visits the garden, we can often find the black, powder coated trellises full with flowers, or vining vegetables, for a full lush feel that Marnie loves about her garden.

Maximizing the unused, side yard space was the goal for these raised kitchen gardens in Tanglewood.

We wanted to create something unique for this Tanglewood Interior Designer. As a result, the side gardens were built in a 1’ height, that serves as the herb garden, and a 2’ height for the vegetable garden.

The simple, metal panel trellis is adhered to the cedar fence and is home to loads of tomatoes during the spring and fall in the Houston kitchen garden.

Cor Ten Twin Garden in Memorial Villages designed by Rooted Garden featured in Kitchen Garden Revival

Twin Gardens in Memorial Villages

These rounded, Twin Corten Gardens, have brought so much enjoyment to husband and wife clients who gifted these gardens to one another in January of 2018.

Corten, is a patina metal, that darkens as it ages and provides many years of durability and growing enjoyment.

These gardens can always be found packed full of bright, colorful flowers, over flowing herbs, tall swiss chard, mature kale and vining cucumbers or tomatoes.

Brick Four Garden Classic designed by Rooted Garden featured in Kitchen Garden Revival

Brick Four Garden Classic in Tanglewood, Houston, Texas

This client had recently moved into their new, Tanglewood area home, when we met with her for a garden consultation and garden design.

The clients had a large, open space that overlooked their kitchen window. In addition, it was seen from their cars as they drove in and out each day. Lastly, this space received optimal sunlight for growing a wide array of vegetables and herbs.

We created a slurried brick garden design to both be aesthetically pleasing and provide the longevity the homeowners were desiring.

Providing garden maintenance and coaching to West University client, Anu, has been such a rewarding experience.

We have literally watched Anu “grow” in her garden experience and confidence in this West University kitchen garden. This client is an avid cook, and spends much time in the garden, as well as cooking for her family.

She utilizes loads of fresh herbs and vegetables in her recipes, and has plenty growing in the garden all year round in Houston

A garden with a view! This Cedar Four Garden Classic design is visible from several rooms in this charming home. Harvesting the abundance of herbs and vegetables, that are available at any given time in the Houston Kitchen Garden, a breeze.

When thinking of your own kitchen garden space, the ideal location is one close to the kitchen or an area of your space that is frequented by your family. Our theory is that the more the garden is visible, the more it will be utilized and enjoyed!

Amy gifted this garden to her husband, Todd, and we couldn’t have been happier to design and install it for them.

West University Border Garden designed by Rooted Garden featured in Kitchen Garden Revival

Cedar Border Garden in Braeswood, Houston , Texas

These border gardens were recently featured in the March issue of Southern Living Magazine.

The goal of the feature was to highlight the growing food movement, that includes raised kitchen gardens, within existing yard spaces.

The team placed these gardens in a way to maximize the southern sun, and the close proximity to the clients outdoor living space.

The panel trellises were added so Rochelle, her husband and four children could grow vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and peas up them.

Memorial Stone Garden Trio designed by Rooted Garden featured in Kitchen Garden Revival

Stone Garden Trio in Memorial Villages in Houston, Texas

This stone garden trio was a special project to honor the homeowner’s three daughter’s, one garden for each.

Each garden is a half circle encompassed with ample gravel walkways on each side. The space was meant to be an oasis, a retreat, a getaway space within the lush landscape that surrounds the home.

Kitchen Garden Revival features a beautiful aerial shot of this garden and many other photos of the space throughout the book.

The Rooted Garden team was honored to design and build this raised garden for Billy and Christie’s new home.

This garden is located close to the outdoor kitchen and living space. The idea was for the space to be open and inviting for guests, but with raised kitchen gardens as then focal point.

We love maintaining and photographing this garden, it is always so lush and productive.
