The Initial Meeting

The Rooted Garden Team spent a beautiful spring morning transforming a grassy patch into a kitchen garden.

Our team met with Bellaire homeowner and friend Randy to discuss a garden design that would allow his young daughter to have a vegetable garden of her own

During our initial meeting with Randy we looked for a sunny location that would be easy to access and have optimal sunlight for growing vegetables. We also didn’t want the garden to interfere with their outdoor living space, so they settled on a sunny space near the tennis court.

Preparing the Garden Space

The team first staked out the space, then the hard work of grass removal began. Once the grass is removed the team digs a trench to install heavy duty steel edging. The edging provides a clean aesthetic and is a core design principle in a Rooted Garden installation, a separate space for the kitchen garden.

Next, the team installed Blackstar gravel to coordinate with the gravel in other areas around the home and helps with drainage in the garden space. The gravel is carefully spread out and leveled for a smooth garden space.

Bring in the Cedar Raised Gardens

The cedar gardens are handcrafted by local carpenters and the exterior of this cedar garden was stained using a high quality exterior weather resistant stain in the same color as the client’s cedar fence.

Each cedar garden is custom made to fit the clients space and budget and details such as the garden length, width and height are all discussed during the initial garden consultation. These gardens measure 8’ long x 3’ wide x 2’ high and provide 48 square feet of garden space.

Once the gardens are placed it is time to fill the beds up with the Rooted Garden signature soil blend. A sandy loam based soil that is optimal for growing vegetables and herbs. This unique blend is organically made without any filler or synthetic fertilizers. We believe in starting with a rich soil that encourages healthy and strong plant growth.

Trellises: A Rooted Garden Design Feature

High quality, steel garden trellises are another design feature used in Rooted Garden installations. These panel trellises were chosen and placed in the center of the garden beds to allow tending and growing on both sides, maximizing space for vining vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peas and beans. Houston’s unique climate will allow the trellises to have a vegetable growing on them all year long.

It’s Time to Plant

Once the trellises and irrigation are installed the planting team is ready to plant each garden using the Rooted Garden intensive planting philosophy. The team will give each plant just the amount of space it needs and nothing extra, enhancing beauty, fullness and most importantly fresh herbs and vegetables in the space.

Our plants are grown locally, using organic growing methods and without the use of synthetic fertilizers ensuring we are starting each garden with the very best!

And the Completed Kitchen Garden!

This garden was planted for warm season, which in Houston runs from March-May and then again September-November. During this seasons the quintessential vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash can be grown along with loads of fresh herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme, basil, chives, thyme and oregano.

We are so thankful for Randy and his family and the trust they put in us for their kitchen garden project. We couldn’t do these projects without our team and we are so appreciative of the hard work and dedication they show to each project.

We can’t wait to watch their garden grow in the weeks and months ahead!
