How to Grow Bush Beans in Houston

How to Grow Bush Beans in Your Houston Kitchen Garden

Bush beans are one of Rooted Garden’s favorite vegetables to grow. They are versatile, and can do well in gardens with less than optimal sun, as well as gardens with full sun.

Pole Beans can be grown along a trellises space, while bush beans can be planted just about anywhere in the kitchen garden.

Bush Beans Can Be Planted On the Outside Row in a Houston Kitchen Garden

The Rooted Garden philosophy is to maximize our clients kitchen garden space. One way we can do this is by planting bush beans along the outside of the garden space, allowing the beans to grow over the sides of the garden. Planting in this way, prevents them shading other vegetables that are planted on the interior of the garden space.

Step 1 to Growing Bush Beans

Plant Bush Beans by Seed in a Compost Rich Soil

Bush beans seeds can be planted fairly close together. Use a dibber or other garden tool to plant seeds every 3”. The rule of thumb is to plant seeds twice the width of the seed. Bush bean seeds are fairly large compared to other seeds, so plant them approximately 2-4” deep.

Be sure to keep the seeds well watered to allow germination. The seeds will start to emerge after only a few days!

Step 2 to Growing Bush Beans

As Plants Grow, Support the Base of Each Plant with a Hill of Compost

Compost helps to protect the young plant from pests, while providing necessary nutrients to grow strong and healthy plants.

Step 3 to Growing Bush Beans

Regularly Check the Under Side of Each Plant & Harvest Often

Pests love to hide, and by checking the under side of the leaves, we can identify and address the problem early.

Harvesting regularly and often promotes continued growth throughout the season.

Step 4 to Growing Bush Beans

Harvest Beans with Pruners to Protect Plants & Replant New Seeds Every 3-4 Weeks for More Beans

Beans planted in early March are ready for harvest at the end of May.

An initial planting in March, with subsequent planting every 3-4 weeks, will ensure a continued harvest during the season.
